Wessex Cancer Alliance Board

The Board meets quarterly to oversee the delivery of the Long Term Plan for cancer and the local cancer ambitions, and ensure we realise these ambitions within the agreed timescales.

It is made up of senior leaders from the local Integrated Care Systems, provider organisations, specialised commissioners, primary care, public health, and the Wessex Clinical Research Network.

David joined University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust in February 2016 as chief financial officer and also became deputy chief executive in 2019. He served as interim chief executive from April to September 2018 and took up that role again in November 2020 before taking on the role substantively in April 2021. He read economics and social policy at the University of London before joining ICI plc, where he qualified as a chartered management accountant.

David is Executive Chair for the Wessex Cancer Alliance Board.

Matt is a consultant urological surgeon at University Hospital Southampton, specialising in complex retroperitoneal and pelvic cancer surgery.  He was appointed in 2002 after surgical training in Wessex, Bristol and the Royal Marsden Hospital, London, and he is an honorary senior lecturer for the University of Southampton.

Matt is the Medical Director of the Wessex Cancer Alliance and has led improvements in cancer services across Dorset, Hampshire and Isle of Wight for over ten years.

Sally first joined the NHS in 2004 working in Service Improvement and Commissioning spending 13 years in transformation of services, after a successful career working in petroleum refining as a Chartered Chemical Engineer.

In Sally’s previous role as Network Manager for the Cancer Strategic Clinical Network, she was responsible for the programme management of cancer health service improvement across Wessex, leading a programme to reduce premature mortality across Wessex. Sally published both the cancer five year Strategic Vision for Wessex and research on early detection and translation of learning to other clinical areas at a national level. Sally is currently Managing Director of Wessex Cancer Alliance.

Simon is Director of Public Health for Hampshire and Isle of Wight Councils. Within this role, Simon chairs the HIOW STP Prevention Board and Population Health Management Board. Simon’s strong working relationships with Police and Criminal Justice enables him to lead key areas of work.

Previous to being Director of Public Health, Simon held the position of Associate Director of Public Health for both Hampshire County Council and Isle of Wight Council. Simon has worked in the local area for 20 years in a variety of Public Health and senior management roles.

Dorset County Hospital NHS Foundation Trust logo

Provides clinical leadership to the Dorset Cancer Partnership which operates across the Dorset Integrated Care System; and represents the DCP within the WCA.  This includes leadership to enable delivery of the Dorset Cancer Strategy, effective prioritisation of service developments and live issues and leadership of the Dorset Clinical Advisory Board which supports the Dorset SSGs.

Representing the Alliance’s Involvement Steering Group, to support strategic decision-making, by reflecting the views of the Group and other evidence from patients, family members, care-givers and the public.

NHS England and Improvement

Christopher has been Medical Director for Commissioning for NHS England / NHS Improvement South East region for two years. He previously held posts as Consultant Gastroenterologist at Queen Mary’s Roehampton and St Georges Hospital and was Hon Consultant at the Royal Marsden and on the Liver Unit at King’s College Hospital. He moved to the Royal Surrey County Hospital in 2005 and was appointed Medical Director in 2007 and Deputy Chief Executive in 2017. He left the Royal Surrey in 2019 to work for NHSE/I full time. His main clinical interests were in viral hepatitis and advanced therapeutic endoscopy. During the pandemic he has led the Regional Cancer and Endoscopy workstreams.

Alex started her career in operational management on an oil refinery and holds an engineering degree from Cambridge University. Alex became chief operating officer at Winchester Hospital in 2010 and was part of the team which created Hampshire Hospitals NHS FT in a successful NHS merger. In 2012, Alex moved to the community and mental health sector as Chief Operating Officer for Solent NHS Trust. She developed a passion for working with people from across health and care in order to join things up for patients. She became Chief Executive of Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in 2017.

Jane Is the Lead Nurse for Wessex Cancer Alliance. Her role is to bring cancer nursing leadership across all of the work programmes. She has both a clinical and academic background which supports her role in providing expert advice to the Alliance and across partner organisations (commissioners and providers in primary and secondary care) in relation to nursing and allied health professionals working in cancer. She works with the wider team to develop and deliver the ambitions of the Wessex Cancer Alliance Strategic Vision and the NHS Long Term Plan.
