Coping with indigestion and heart burn

What is indigestion and heartburn?

Indigestion is discomfort in the upper part of the tummy (abdomen), which usually occurs after a meal. Heartburn is a burning sensation behind the breastbone. It is caused when acid from the stomach irritates the lining of the oesophagus (food pipe).

What can I do about it?

Speak to your doctor or nurse who can suggest what might be best and prescribe any necessary medication.

Useful tips if you are experiencing indigestion and heartburn

To help your digestive system cope better with your food and drink:

  • Take your time with eating and sit upright
  • Avoid bending down and limit activity for at least 30 minutes after eating
  • Try not to eat a meal within two hours of going to bed
  • Try using an extra pillow in bed or raise the head of the bed by a few inches to avoid lying flat
  • Wear loose clothing round your waist
  • Make a note of any foods that cause you discomfort so you can avoid them until your symptoms have settled
  • Some people find that eating a large meal, alcohol, fatty and spicy foods, and fizzy drinks can cause symptoms or make them worse.
