Coping with a dry mouth
Why have I got a dry mouth?
Some cancer drugs, painkillers and radiotherapy can make your mouth dry. After radiotherapy to the head, some people can have a permanently dry mouth. Your mouth may also be dry if you are not eating or drinking properly because you are not well enough.
When your mouth is dry, you are at increased risk of getting infections such as thrush and tooth decay.
What can I do about it?
Speak to your doctor or nurse who can prescribe medication such as mouth washes, artificial saliva spray, gel, or pastilles. They can suggest what might help in your situation. However, if there is no obvious reason for your dry mouth, talk to your doctor or nurse about the medicines you are taking.
Useful tips if you have a dry mouth
- Sip fluids frequently to help moisten your mouth.
- Milk, water, fruit, or vegetable juices are the best drinks to choose, but any fluid is better than nothing.
- Dilute citrus juices with water so they’re not as acidic.
- Try to keep a glass or bottle of water with you at all times.
- Take regular sips with your meal to help you chew and swallow your food.
- Choose meals and foods that are moist. Try dipping dry foods such as bread or biscuits into liquids such as soup or tea.
- Use gravies and sauces to make swallowing easier.
- Try sugar-free boiled sweets or chew sugar free chewing gum to stimulate saliva production, which will moisten your mouth.
- Sucking on ice cubes or ice lollies may be refreshing.
- Eating fresh pineapple can keep your mouth fresh and moist but avoid acidic fruits (such as oranges, grapefruit) if your mouth is sore.
- Avoid sticky, chewy, and dry foods.
Tips for looking after your mouth
Good oral hygiene (mouth care) is very important during treatment:
- Keep your mouth clean by brushing your teeth twice a day if possible.
- Regularly use alcohol-free mouthwashes and gargles.
- Drink plenty of fluids. Aim for eight to 10 cups of fluid each day (at least 2 litres or 3½ pints).
Your treatment centre may recommend specific products for mouth care.
