Coping with feeling full quickly
Why do I feel full quickly?
Many people find that they feel full long before completing their meal. This can be as a result of your illness or a side effect of treatment.
What can I do about it?
Speak to your doctor or nurse who may be able to prescribe a medication to help your stomach empty faster. Try to avoid getting constipated, as this may make your symptoms worse.
Useful tips to help with feeling full quickly
- Eat at the same times each day, even if you do not feel hungry. Aim for ‘little and often’, having regular small meals and snacks.
- Serve smaller portions on large plates or a side plate/saucer to avoid feeling overwhelmed at mealtimes. You can always go back for more!
- Having something to drink with your meal may fill you up. Try having nourishing drinks between meals instead. For example, a hot chocolate made with milk or a milk shake.
- Choose high-energy foods such as full fat and full sugar products or fortify your food with things like cheese, butter, or cream. This can help you make the most of every mouthful you manage to eat. Please see our leaflet on food fortification for more details.
- Sit up straight when eating, as this can help your food and drink move down your digestive system more easily.
- Avoid lying down immediately after eating. Try to go out for a short walk.
