COPD and Lung Cancer

PCNs are encouraged to promote this webinar to all clinical staff completing COPD reviews to ensure everyone is fully aware of the COPD requirement of this year’s Local Improvement Scheme and how this will be monitored.

The webinar addresses the complexity of diagnosing lung cancer in COPD patients and provides some practical tips on how to identify red flags during COPD reviews. Please circulate this webinar across your PCNs to ensure all appropriate staff have had the opportunity to attend.

2025/26 PCN DES – National Contract

25/26 PCN DES

25/26 PCN DES Guidance

The cancer specific elements include:

8.3.1. A PCN must seek to improve health outcomes for its population using a data-driven approach and population health management techniques in line with guidance and the CORE20PLUS5 approach:

c) reviewing cancer referral practice in collaboration with partners and working to improve early diagnosis; and

d) working with partners to improve screening uptake, inclusive of breast, bowel and cervical cancer.

If you have signed up to the WCA Local Improvement Scheme or Dorset Incentive Scheme then this will support you in achieving 8.3.1c) through the Primary Care Cancer Audit element.

For support with the improving screening requirement 8.3.1d) you may want to visit the Cancer Screening Programmes page within the Primary Care Toolkit or contact our team at wessexcanceralliance@wca.uhs.nhs.uk

Investment and Impact Fund

The IIF indicator for FIT and Lower GI suspected cancer referrals remains the same as the previous year:

CAN04 – The proportion of patients who have had a lower gastrointestinal urgent suspected cancer referral in the reporting year where at least one urgent suspected cancer referral was accompanied by a faecal immunochemical test result, with the result recorded in the 21 days leading up to the referral.

For more details on FIT and the Wessex Lower GI pathway please see our Symptomatic FIT page
