Workforce

Good working relations and well-co-ordinated, effective MDT working is required for all teams looking after patients with cancer who have prehabilitation and rehabilitation. Prehabilitation leadership is recommended at a hospital, regional and place-based level that supports local quality assurance, efficiency of provision and operational oversight.

Multidisciplinary team working is required to ensure:

  • timely and appropriate referrals into services for screening, assessment, treatment or advice
  • rapid access to appropriate professionals should there be a clinical concern e.g., metastatic spinal cord compression
  • timely referrals from the service where concerns exist about progressive disease or complications or where further management or specialist care is needed e.g., referral to psychological support services.

Individuals working in cancer care or aligned services can find information on educations and training at the Wessex Cancer Academy

The prehabilitation workforce matrix, as set out in the Macmillan Prehabilitation Guidelines (start at page 24), provides a guide to the different roles that can deliver universal, targeted and specialist support across exercise, nutrition and psychology and includes reference to the Aspirant Cancer Career and Education Development (ACCEND) programme levels of practice that these roles (where applicable) should operate at, in order to support people with cancer.
