Recovery of Cancer Services Funding

At the end of June 2021, the Cancer Programme was allocated additional funding to accelerate models that manage high volume referrals and streamline the front end of the pathway to support in the recovery of cancer services.

As part of this the WCA had to put in a bid (within a 2 week period so limited time available for wider stakeholder engagement and collaboration) with a proposal of how to use these funds to accelerate these models and support implementation on our most challenged local pathways.

Physician Associate Role

The bid proposal included optimising the potential of a new workforce by funding one Physician Associate (PA) to work within each of the six Wessex urology cancer diagnostic pathways and within breast cancer services in three acute Trusts across Wessex.  The PAs would be additional members to the team, funded for a period of 12 months with the potential to start work in October / November.

Expression of Interest

To support the recruitment, development and impact evaluation of these roles we require an experienced urology nurse specialist and breast nurse specialist with experience of diagnostic pathways and quality improvement experience, to work with Wessex Cancer Alliance’s workforce programme manager to ensure these roles support cancer service recovery with clear benefits for the patient.
