Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) Coordinators

Also known as MDT Facilitators, this role is a unique non-registered profession working as part of the multidisciplinary team to help the patients progress through their pathway after a cancer diagnosis.

MDT coordinators track patients, making sure all the required information is available to help the clinicians make the right decisions for each patient. This involves speaking to different departments such as asking pathology or radiology for test results as well as the nurses and consultants.

Another key responsibility is prepping and coordinating the MDT meeting. These happen most weeks and involve a clinical discussion of each patient on the list. The coordinator is responsible for documenting the discussion accurately.

MDT Coordinators are located in most cancer sites, and although they are not clinically trained need to have a good understanding of medical terminology and enjoy a fast paced and often high pressure environment.

You can hear from Lucy, one of Wessex’s gynae coordinators who spoke about the role at the supportive workforce conference in 2024 or Gemma who describes her role for our careers project

MDT Development Days

In November 2025 we held our annual MDT coordinator development days. All Wessex Coordinators were invited to join one of six sessions to learn and to network with others working in the same tumour groups as them.

You can watch recordings and download the presentation slides from each session here.

Attendees at each development day saw presentations on non-primary pathways and the MDT Live List.
