WesFit is the world’s first, large-scale research trial, initially funded by NHS England transformation funding. The team work closely with the Wessex Cancer Alliance on the Personalised Care Programme, which aims to maximise the health and well-being of patients from the point of diagnosis.
And now you have the opportunity to meet some of the team behind this innovative trial, as they will be presenting at the Health and Care Innovation Expo 2019, on Wednesday 4 September 2019, 11:45am-12:15pm – find out more here.
Patients who participate in the trial will not only receive the potential benefits of prehabilitation but will also be contributing to the evidence needed to inform NHS England and commissioners into how we can mainstream prehabilitation as a key element of the patient pathway.
“There’s a purpose, there’s a reason, and I think when you are going through what I and many others are going through, then it’s exactly what you need, a purpose. Something to get you up and out of your jammys in the morning. I can’t imagine not doing it, what would be the alternative? Just sitting around at home for 15-weeks waiting for the operation? It helps me feel like I am taking control and doing something to help myself.”
WesFit is the only large clinical trial of structured exercise and psychological prehabilitation in the world and is viewed as an exemplar both nationally and internationally. The team has been integral to the collaboration between Macmillan, the Royal College of Anaesthetists and the National Institute for Health Research they recently published ‘Principles and Guidance for Prehabilitation’.
