Raising awareness of prostate cancer with and for Black men

Prostate cancer affects 1 in 4 men from Black African, Caribbean and Black British communities, which is higher than the 1 in 8 men from other communities. Black men are also less likely to act on their symptoms and visit the doctor, this means that if they have cancer then this can be harder to treat. The presentation on this page sets out this issue in more detail.

Wessex Cancer Alliance, with support from Dorset Race Equality Council and Wessex Voices, are working together with a group of Black men, their partners and other organisations to make sure men are aware of this.  We are listening to what they tell us about accessing health services, what they know about prostate cancer, and how we can all make sure men have the right information to decide what they need to do if they have concerns.

This project only started in April and we want to invite more people to get involved to make it a success.  You can read about the conversation so far in the meeting notes to the right of this page. Notes from our latest meeting held on 17th May, will be uploaded soon along with our project action plan.

If you are interested in the project or would like to attend a future meeting, please get in touch with Nathalie Sherring on nathalie.sherring@dorsetrec.org.uk.
