Expressions of Interest for Breast Awareness project

Wessex Cancer Alliance have launched a local improvement project to promote breast self-awareness in practices by Practice Nurses. Expressions of Interest are now being accepted.

Project Aim: The practice aims to promote awareness to patients on breast self-awareness and examination at routine smear appointments by practice nurses. The alliance will support the practice to achieve this. Particular emphasis will be afforded to practices with low breast screening uptake and with a higher proportion of hard to engage populations.

Process: Practice nurses will ascertain patient knowledge of breast checking and educate/inform the patient using the materials provided in the handy resource box (known as the ‘boob box’)

Each participating practice will be given a box of resources which will contain all the necessary materials to allow nurses to increase confidence and educate the patient during a routine smear appointment. The emphasis is ‘get to know your normal’.

Boxes will include:

  • Promotional materials for the patient – shower stickers, leaflets. These are provided by the charity Coppafeel
  • Badges for staff
  • FAQs
  • Training Resources

Project start date and Duration: 4 practices are required to take part in the initial pilot project that will start run for 6 months.

Funding and payment arrangements: For participating practices –0.20p per patient (weighted) -so for a practice of 7800 weighted patients this equates to £1560. Half to be paid at project sign up and the remainder at completion upon submission of evaluation report.
