Format: Face to face or Virtual study Day (up to 8 hours taught) and up to 50 hours personal study to complete the passport. Clinically supervised time for SACT administration and assessment in practice
Description: Systemic Anti-Cancer Therapy (SACT) treatments can be complex and put patients at risk of significant and potentially fatal toxicities. There are also risks to those who handle SACT from occupational exposure if control measures are inadequate (HSE 2017). It is essential that staff are trained and assessed as competent to safely administer SACT (HSE 2017). Supporting patients and their carers during SACT is as important as safe drug delivery.
Core knowledge components to be covered on the training:
- What is cancer?
- How SACT drugs work
- Routes of administration
- Patient assessment
- Toxicities of SACT
- Safe handling & administration
- Legal & professional issues
- Prophylactic/supportive/rescue interventions
- The psychosocial impact of SACT treatment
- Patient education and self-care advice
- Advancing SACT Practice – next steps?
