A Matron is an experienced nurse with significant experience post registration which is likely to have involved time as a Ward Leader. A Matron has a leadership role within their team.
As a Matron you are most likely to: 
  • be based on a ward
  • use advanced clinical expertise to care for your patients
  • have line management responsibility ensuring your team are also delivering high quality care
  • have advanced communication skills
  • manage a budget for your service
  • be involved with service improvement work
  • implement policy and procedures

Entry Requirements

A Matron is a registered nurse with significant experience post qualification.

A Matron will also be educated to post-graduate level, although some will achieve this qualification while working as a Matron.

Training Routes

The most common route into nursing is by completing a nursing degree, you can select adult or children and young people’s nursing. You may also be able to train via a nursing apprenticeship degree.

One of the career progression routes for cancer nurses is to become a Cancer Care Matron. A Cancer Care Matron will also be educated to post-graduate level, which can be achieved whilst working as a nurse.

Key Skills

Nurses should have an interest in science and a desire to work clinically with people to improve their health and wellbeing. Nurses need be able to work as part of a team, be flexible and good at managing time. They also need to be great communicators and have the ability to solve problems and remain calm under pressure.

A Matron is a leadership role which includes staff management as well as budget and service responsibilities.

Career Development

A Matron might consider working towards a deputy director or divisional lead nurse role.

Pay and benefits

As a Cancer Care Matron you would be paid on the Agenda for Change pay system at Band 8a, or 8b as a Senior Matron.
