careers in cancer

Do you have an interest in technology? Do you think you’d enjoy taking x-rays?

A mammographer is a registered radiographer who has undertaken additional training to take photographs of the breast or breast tissue. A mammographer would typically first qualify as a diagnostic radiographer who uses X-ray technology to take images inside the body. You could also first train as a therapeutic radiographer who uses radiation therapy to treat cancer.
As a mammographer you are most likely to:
  • Work as part of a team both in the community and in the hospital
  • Take images on a breast screening mobile unit to try and detect cancer
  • Work closely with patients helping them understand and feel at ease during their screening
  • Be responsible for the safety measures and checks on the machines

Entry Requirements

To start your career as a radiographer you will need five GCSEs at grade A-C/9-4 including English, maths and science plus two or three A-Levels including physics, chemistry or biology/human biology.

You would then apply for an undergraduate degree or degree apprenticeship in either diagnostic or therapeutic radiography.
