An Advanced Practitioner is someone who has undertaken advanced clinical training in their field. They will be experienced and registered professionals educated to masters level who have the skills and knowledge to expand their practice to care for their patients under the four pillars of; clinical practice, leadership and management, education and research.

As part of the breast screening team, Chelsey is a registered diagnostic radiographer with additional training in mammography followed by advanced practice training.

As an Advanced Practitioner Radiographer in the breast screening team you are most likely to:

  • Take assessment imaging in the hospital for patients that need further investigation
  • Discuss caseloads and review images to guide what each patient needs
  • Make complex decisions about patient care
  • Assist in procedures such as biopsies and some surgical procedures like the placing of wires
  • Input to the multi-disciplinary meetings
  • Instigate and take part in service improvement activity
  • Have some management, research or educational responsibilities

Entry Requirements

To start your career as a radiographer you will need five GCSEs at grade A-C/9-4 including English, maths and science plus two or three A-Levels including physics, chemistry or biology/human biology.

You would then apply for an undergraduate degree or degree apprenticeship typically in diagnostic radiography but you could also select therapeutic radiography.

Training Routes

An Advanced Practitioner Radiographer would start their career as a Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) registered diagnostic or therapeutic radiographer.

They will likely undertake masters study to become a mammographer like Rebecca has done
The next step would be to apply for a place on an Advanced Clinical Practice Training Programme studying at masters level as well as gaining clinical and management experience

Pay and benefits

As an trainee Advanced Clinical Practitioner, you’ll be paid on the Agenda for Change (AFC) pay system, typically starting on Band 7 with opportunities to progress with training and experience.

Career Development

Advanced practice training will take place over a number of years depending on part time or full time study.

As an experienced radiographer you will undertake additional training to specialise in different technologies and also different areas of practice.

Advanced Practitioners may chose to study further applying for a consultant training programme, progressing to a Consultant Radiographer.

You could also use the skills you have learnt in management, education or research.
