An administrator in cancer care takes phone calls from patients and provides admin support to the wider team.

The care coordinator role is an expansion on the admin role to include patient care, such as the fitting of lymphoedema sleeves and prosthetic fittings, and supporting doctors with clinical tasks.

As an administrator in a cancer care team you are most likely to:

  • Work in a busy hospital environment providing support to your team members;
  • Take telephone calls from patients and respond to their queries;
  • Liaise with other departments in the hospital;
  • Perform admin tasks such as typing letters and emails, arranging meetings and booking appointments;

As a care coordinator you are most likely to complete the above duties as well as:

  • Having more patient contact;
  • Being responsible for coordinating care for patients;
  • Undertaking service specific duties such as fitting lymphedema sleeves, gloves and breast prosthesis
  • Support doctors with clinical tasks

Entry Requirements

There are no specific entry requirements for administrator roles but a GCSE (or equivalent qualification) in English would be valued.

Experience in customer service, admin and IT would be beneficial including prior use of Microsoft office Packages.

Care coordinators would require more experience within health services and preferably in cancer care.

Training Routes

With desirable skills such as IT, communication and organisational ability many administrators join the NHS from school, college or other roles. There are many training and development opportunities within the NHS allowing staff to work in other areas and to develop their skills in their areas of interest.

Pay and benefits

Administrators and coordinators are paid on the Agenda for Change (AfC) pay system with administrative roles starting at a Band 2 and progressing to a band 3.  Care coordinator roles are typically employed at a band 3 or 4 dependent on experience.
