An MDT Facilitator/Coordinator tracks the progress of patients when they are referred for suspected cancer to ensure complete records are presented at multi-disciplinary team (MDT) meetings. It is an administration role which contributes to the smooth running of the patient pathway.

As an MDT Facilitator/Coordinator you are most likely to:

  • Prepare results of patient tests to present to MDT meetings;
  • Track patients on your list to make sure investigations are completed on time;
  • Liaise with other clinical departments to resolve delays;
  • Enjoy the high-pressure environment of the MDT meeting and take accurate notes about clinical decisions to be approved by MDT lead;
  • Update patient data accurately to support reporting within the Trust;
  • Build a strong knowledge of cancer and its treatments;
  • Be confident to speak to clinical staff at all levels;

Entry Requirements

There are no specific entry requirements for this role but a GCSE (or equivalent qualification) in English would be valued. 

Experience in customer service, admin and IT would be beneficial including prior use of Microsoft Office packages.

Training Routes

With prior experience you could apply directly for an MDT Coordinator role within a Trust. 

If you needed to build your experience first, you could look for NHS roles such as an admin assistant, booking clerk or receptionist.

You could also look for Customer Service or Business Administration Apprenticeship opportunities within the NHS.

  • Be keen to learn, undertake courses and understand how your service works;
  • Be a team player willing to support your peers for the smooth running of the service;
  • Be persistent and assertive in tracking the progress of your patients;

  • Have the initiative to ensure the patient pathway is as efficient as possible.

Pay and benefits

MDT Facilitator/Coordinator are paid on the Agenda for Change (AfC) pay system with most roles at a band 4. Trainee roles are available at a band 3 and team lead roles are typically at Band 5

Career Development

MDT Coordinators could progress into a team lead role where they support other coordinators.
