careers in cancer

Cancer Support Workers (CSW) are part of the cancer team, working alongside the Clinical Nurse Specialist to provide additional support, information and signposting to the patient, their family and wider supporters following a cancer diagnosis.

CSW roles, job titles and day-to-day tasks vary depending on local context and priorities, however, the overall aim of the role remains the same – offering the right support to patients at the right time and supporting people to manage their own care.

As a CSW you are most likely to:

  • Work in a hospital Trust alongside the Clinical Nurse Specialist and wider team;
  • Support patients who have been diagnosed with cancer, through their treatment and beyond;
  • Be a point of contact for patients with questions or worries;
  • Coordinate the necessary assessments, appointments or investigations for each patient;
  • Consider the holistic needs of patients and signpost them to appropriate services;
  • Undertake holistic needs assessments and care planning for patients
