Are you a good communicator and looking for a patient facing role?

An Assistant Practitioner works under the supervision of a radiographer supporting the imaging of patients. This role may also be referred to as a Mammography Associate. 
As an Assistant Practitioner in the breast screening team you are most likely to: 
  • Work either both in the hospital and on the breast screening vans, 
  • Work directly with patients and with other radiography staff, 
  • Talk to patients attending for screening ensuring they are informed and feeling at ease
  • Under supervision take images of breast tissue as part of screening to identify or exclude cancer
  • Assist in clinics and procedures as required
  • Prepare images and paperwork for reporting 

Entry Requirements

You will need qualifications such as Five GCSEs at grades A-C/9-4 including Maths and English or equivalent
Experience in a hospital setting with patients would also be beneficial

Training Routes

You can typically train as an Assistant Practitioner by undertaking a 12 month Level 4 Mammography Associate apprenticeship, allowing you to work and train on the job.

Following completion, Mammography Associates will be qualified to work within the breast imaging workforce undertaking routine two-view mammography in a hospital, mobile breast screening unit or medical centre.

Career Development

Mammography Associates and Assistant Practitioners are now able to work towards gaining accreditation by demonstrating their competencies: Assistant practitioner accreditation | CoR (collegeofradiographers.ac.uk)

There are plans to develop a Level 5 Assistant Practitioner apprenticeship to provide progression for these roles.

Assistant Practitioners may also choose to progress their careers in radiography with a diagnostic radiographic apprenticeship or diagnostic radiographic degree.

Pay and benefits

As a trainee assistant practitioner, you’ll be paid on the Agenda for Change (AFC) pay system, typically starting on Band 3 progressing to a Band 4 when qualified.
