Are you good with computers? Do numbers and data interest you?

An analyst in cancer care works as part of a team examining data. They monitor information and produce reports that helps the hospital plan and make changes to provide better care for patients.  Some of this information will also be used by the hospital to report on performance on a national level.

As an analyst you are most likely to:

  • Work in a hospital trust as part of a team;
  • Spend your time in an office working with different data sets;
  • Use statistical programmes to analyse the data;
  • Produce a variety of reports often to strict deadlines;
  • Help your hospital to know if they are meeting national standards of care;
  • Know that you are helping to improve patient care behind the scenes;

Entry Requirements

You will need a good range of GCSE’s (or equivalent) especially in maths and should consider taking A-levels (or equivalent) qualifications in subjects such as maths and computing.

Training Routes

There are three training routes within the NHS

  • You could look for an entry level role such as a what was your first temp role Sonia?
  • You could look for an NHS apprenticeship such as one in Informatics
  • You could go to university and gain a degree such as Statistical Analysis

Key Skills

You will:

  • Have excellent math and computer skills, particularly in data analysis;
  • Have good attention to detail and high levels of accuracy;
  • Be good at solving complex problems;
  • Be able to take a systems thinking approach to consider the bigger picture;
  • Be an excellent communicator, able to explain your analysis to a range of people in different formats;
  • Be able to prioritise competing priorities and focus to meet deadlines.

Pay and benefits

As an apprentice you are likely to start on an apprenticeship wage of approximately £12,500 per year.  NHS anlaysts are paid on the Agenda for Change (AfC) pay system with roles starting at a Band 3 and progressing up to Band 8 for senior and lead analytical roles.

Working in analytics and data gives you a breadth of opportunities to develop and grow your skills. You would have the chance to work in different areas of healthcare as well as progress into more senior roles
