A Patient Pathway coordinator or PPC works in a team supports patients who have been referred with a suspected cancer to navigate the care system. It is an admin based role which contributes to the smooth running of their pathway as well as being an important contact for both patients and clinicians

As a PPC you are most likely to:

  • Work within an admin team within the hospital;
  • Be a contact point for patients from referral, into treatment and beyond;
  • Answer queries via the phone and emails from patients and clinicians;
  • Speak to patients regarding their appointments;
  • Scan clinic notes into the system;
  • Ensure clinics are set up on the day;

Entry Requirements

There are no specific entry requirements for this role but a GCSE (or equivalent qualification) in English would be valued.
Experience in customer service, admin and IT would be beneficial including prior use of Microsoft office Packages.

Training Routes

With prior experience you could apply directly for a PCC role within a Trust.

If you needed to build your experience first you could look for NHS roles such as an admin assistant.

You could also look for Customer Service or Business Administration Apprenticeship opportunities within the NHS

You will:

  • Be an excellent communicator speaking with patients as well as clinicians;
  • Have strong listening skills to support patients;
  • Be keen to learn and understand how your service works;
  • Be a team player willing to support your peers for the smooth running of the service;
  • An organised individual, able to prioritise your workload which may change throughout the day;
  • Be able to use your initiative to ensure patients get the correct information and best care

Pay and benefits

Patient Care Coordinators are typically paid on the Agenda for Change (AfC) pay system typically on a Band 4. You may find trainee or apprenticeship roles on a Band 3. 

Career Development

As a Patient Care Coordinator you may choose to develop your skills through undertaking an apprenticeship such as Business Administrative Cancer Care Contextualized, this is a level 3 and equivalent to A-levels.

If you enjoy the administrative side you could decide to move into a more admin based role with progression into management.

If you wanted more contact with patients you might consider a role such as a health care assistant or a cancer support worker.
